Taking A Family Photo

By Angela Finn

Our photographs with our family during joyful moments and taken when we least expect it are perhaps the best photographs that we have. Since almost everybody has their own camera phone or digital camera these days, it's probably safe to say that we have enough of these shots already. But we also need a family portrait, with all members complete, that we can be proud to show to the children of our children. We need a professionally taken family portrait that we can give as legacy to the next generations.

In Singapore, a family photograph is usually a picture of cultural diversity. And that's the way it has to be. Family photographs should reflect customs and traditions, and they should also reflect the personalities of the members. Because as much as they're for the benefit of the members involved, family photos are also for the next generation. They're the ultimate family accolade that will carry their story for the generations to come.

family photography in Singapore, contrary to what some believe, doesn't have to look too rigid and too formal even if the members dress in their traditional garbs or formal clothes. The photo can look less reserved if everyone would just give their best smile. They can make the photo session fun by holding different themes. If they want, they can choose to put on costumes reflecting certain eras or whatever outfits they want as long as they are in the settled hue.

But just like Children photography, the images must be family-friendly. The members should have fun during the photo shoot but they have to remember not to go overboard and dress up in risqu costumes since the photo is for the family, which most probably includes kids and the elderly.

There are some people who feel that taking a family photo is like is an unpleasant job that they must do. It doesn't have to be that way. Involve everybody in the planning process and not just ask them to attend the photo shoot to make the whole experience fun for all. Ask them for ideas on where to hold the pictorial session or what theme they should have. If everyone contributes, they would feel more involved.
