You better avoid them because they are diuretics, meaning they just dry you out. You are beating the purpose of drinking water which keeps you hydrated.

The best techniques when it comes to singing are those that make you feel at ease and comfortable. If you are feeling a strain in what you are doing, then you might be doing something wrong. Do not strain yourself. If a technique is hurting you, then you better find an alternative for it.
