Know Some Lighting Techniques Used In Digital Photography

By Fra Arellano

Becoming a photographer today has never been easier, thanks to the recent advancements in the field of digital photography. However, if you want to succeed in the field of photography, it wouldn't be enough to own a technologically-advanced camera. Rather, your knowledge and skill to use proper lighting will determine the quality of images you can produce. After all, light is the most vital aspect of photography.

In doing photo shoots, the best times of the day are during the morning and in the afternoon, just before dusk. However, if light is not available, you can utilise an artificial light and create various effects particularly for photo shoots indoors, underwater, or even at night-time. You can use different kinds of lighting to attain a particular effect.

Using Video Light In Photography

Weddings are one of the usual occasions wherein photography is deemed indispensable. To produce images with a romantic feel for the couple, a video light can be used. Unlike flash which gives a strong, unflattering light effect, video lighting is ideal for studio portraits. A video light is perfectly suitable to brighten up a dim location for photo shoots and even huge studios, as it offers a wide range of illumination.

Lighting is important in underwater photography as well, especially in taking photos some metres below the ocean surface. With a handheld underwater video light, you can easily illuminate the surroundings and capture the real colours of fishes, crustaceans and corals.

Using Video Light As A Photography Technique

Video lights are naturally strong, yet you can easily adjust it to achieve the effect you need. You can place a gel in front of an LED video light to create a warm or tungsten effect. LED video lights are also equipped with a diffuser to produce a soft effect on your photographs. Moreover, you can use it along with other lighting equipment such as speed lights and flashguns to employ certain photography techniques.

It's also possible to achieve different lighting effects by placing video lights in different positions during the shoot. For instance, if you would like to create flare in the photo, position the equipment beneath your subject and as you take a shot, make sure that only a part of the light is visible in the picture.
