How To Be A Neil Diamond Impersonator

By Helene Norris

American folksinger-songwriter Neil Leslie Diamond (NLD) was born to a Jewish mother and father in 1941. His soulful, one-of-a-kind voice is a challenge for a Neil Diamond impersonator. He is a big hit with every generation of rock and roll fans and souly-folk fans. His is one of the top three names in the Billboard Adult Contemporary Artists chart. Joining him there are Elton John, who holds the #1 spot, and Barbra Streisand at #2.

Among NLD's biggest hits are "Sweet Caroline, " "Cracklin' Rosie, " "Forever in Blue Jeans" and "America." Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish parents, NLD attended Abraham Lincoln High School. If he ever decides to quit his day job, maybe he can take up a new career in fencing, which he studied at Lincoln. In 1960, he was a member of the NCAA men's championship team.

In terms of entertainment roles, Barbra Streisand has done it all. She started out as a singer-actress and then graduated to fill the roles of songwriter, author, film director and producer. Some of her most popular numbers have been, "People, " "Evergreen, " "The Way We Were" and "Memories." Streisand has collected Best Actress Oscars for her performances in, "Funny Girl, " "Yentl, " "Hello Dolly, " "The Owl and the Pussycat, " "Funny Lady" and "Nuts."

Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, Sir Elton Hercules John was born in 1947 and began quietly working his way into our hearts in the late 1960s. He has received numerous awards for his music, including Oscars, Tony's, Grammy's, Brits and Golden Globes. He performed at the funeral of the late Princess Diana in 1997, where he reprised a rewritten version of his hit, "Candle In The Wind."

Contemporary adult artist #4 in the Billboard Charts (BBC) is a surprising Elvis Presley. This is not surprising that he is listed, but surprising that the King is so far down on the list! He has been listed 53 times, compared to Diamond's 58, Streisand's 64 and Elton's 69.

Next on the list is Barry Manilow, with 50 entries in the BBC. Born Barry Alan Pincus in 1943, some of Manilow's biggest hits include "Mandy, " "Copacabana" and "Can't Smile Without You." He also recorded a New Year's anthem, "It's Just Another New Year's Eve."

Rounding out the chart in spots 6 to 10 are, in alphabetical order, Herb Alpert (and the Tijuana Brass), Johnny Mathis, Kenny Rogers, Frank Sinatra and Dionne Warwick. Stars of tomorrow include Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Imagon Dragons, Lana Del Rey and Cedric Gervais. Lady Gaga, nee Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, was born in New York City in March 1986. Her classical, yet non-distinguishing features make her a prime candidate for periodic reinvention, which she does on a regular basis with tremendous flair. Never afraid to shock or offend, she has a massive international following.

A Neil Diamond impersonator would have his work cut out for him trying to capture the singer's smooth and highly distinctive voice. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. The singer was nominated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. He topped the bill at the Royal Variety Performance in 2012. Most recently, NLD recorded a single called, "Freedom Song, " for which the proceeds are dedicated to the Wounded Warrior Project and One Fund Boston.
