Darkroom Secrets: Proper Photography Techniques For Amateurs

By Allison Maggie Sanchez

Are you disappointed with your photographs' quality? This article will address some tips and techniques that will help you improve on your photographic skills and photographs.

Practice taking pictures of people. Always ask for their permission. People from foreign lands add authenticity, character and liveliness to photographs. Try to get laid back clothing and a candid facial expression.

Usually, you need to choose whether you'd like to expose shadows of a subject or whether you'd like to expose highlights instead. If you so choose, you can take two different pictures with different effects, and blend them together using programs such as Photoshop.

Try different angles to make your photographs more unique. Anyone can see a scene head-on and take a photo of it. Try looking at things from above, or look at them from below. Try composing a shot on the diagonal or from the side to make it more interesting.

Know whether your pictures are being under or overexposed. You can properly adjust your settings by using the histogram feature of your camera. This tool tells you if the shot you've taken was over or under-exposed, giving you the opportunity to fix your settings until they're perfect for the next shot.

Don't take pictures that feature a gray, overcast sky if you can help it. A gray sky is going to make your pictures look washed-out. Black and white photos can work great for an overcast sky. If the sky outside is a beautiful blue, include it in your photos but watch the light.

Do you need pictures of subjects that are soaked or misted with rain? Try to create the effect of rain on your own by carrying a rain bottle with you.

Crop your pictures strategically. A picture could be perfect, but what about that random person in the background? There are also times where the picture is perfect, except for the fact that the subject is a bit off center. Re-center the image by using cropping tools.

Armed with a few great photography tips under your belt, you can dazzle your friends and family with your fine photographic creations. You might be able to get good enough to make some money from your photographs.
