Wedding Photography Tips for Newbies

By Richard Barker

Wedding photography needs plenty of research, practice and dedication. It doesn't work with random clicks of the camera. One needs to properly prepare for a moment and when it offers itself, have everything in place to capture that instant. Things like the brief smile on the face of the bride, low eyes before the kiss, the teary happiness of the parents, the blushes all around, and so much more.

Getting prepared for every one of your marriage photography assignment is critical. Here's some advice and tricks that might come handy.

A prior visit to the location is significant, and this is practiced by every professional in the field. Discuss with the client what he/she predicts from you, and you might even suggest suggestions for a better location or better lighting. While you are prepared to shoot on the day, pay minute attention to every detail. Of course everybody will be dressed for the moment, specially the bride and the groom. Shoot her dress, ring and even the hair dressing. She would be very pleased to admire it even after her wedding days!

Carry a diffuser if you need to shoot in bright daylight. It gives a better image of the bride's makeup! Wedding photography is much more than just knowing your camera and producing good photographs. Take continuing shots as to not miss the details of a minute. A DSLR would be convenient. If you have a tele lens, it works great for the varied candid without the subject noticing them being shot. Try carrying two bodies, one installed with the telezoom and another one with a prime, 50mm generally for a bigger image of the party.

The best bit of the job is when you really deliver the prints to the bride or the groom. Their appreciation for the candid is what makes you succeed. Marriage photography has its own advantages. You would shortly get hooked, if not already.
